KISS Principle and Fill Your Frame

Simplicity and filling your frame are related principles. Try always to focus on one major object and if needed to fill dead space, a secondary and minor detail. Think of it as being similar to telling a story, which is what a photograph really does, using a scene rather than words. When you tell a story, you have one main idea that you are trying to put across. A photo is no different. Stick with one main idea.

Filling your frame with that main idea can help you do that and keep out any distractions that clutter up your story.

Assignment

Go out and look for objects, people or animals - whatever strikes your fancy. Focus in closely on your main idea in composing your shot. For comparative purposes, take another that takes in the surroundings. Make sure you get a half-dozen or more photos.

Hint: Look for strong colours, too. Reds, oranges or yellows against drab backgrounds to make those colours pop.
